Re: Vic 20 brightness fluctuating

Hey, just wanted to say first thing I tried was tweaking the potentiometer. I did notice a small amount of brown residue on one side of the potentiometer which I thought could be concerning. In any case I careful adjusted it, only about 30 degrees or so. So far so good! It's early days and I'm monit...

Re: Vic 20 brightness fluctuating

You could try measuring the 5V level while the VIC is running and see if it's wobbling up and down as the screen changes brightness. Something else you could try is popping the top off the metal box with the video circuit in it and tweaking the potentiometer with a small screwdriver, just a little ...

Re: Vic 20 brightness fluctuating

Thanks for replying. I'm using an original power supply, I've not had any obvious problems with it so far, but it does sound similar to one or two problems in threads I've found on this forum. I noticed they power supplies are very expensive to replace on eBay :( Is there any ways to tell if the pow...

Vic 20 brightness fluctuating

Since purchasing my first Vic 20 in February I've been on a bit of a journey of discovery. Since the early days of learning about memory to recapping the machine and cleaning the cassette deck it's now running really fantastic. Well, almost! Whilst using the Vic, particularly with light backgrounds,...

Re: Vic 20 Noob: trying to load Bewitched

Ah I see, so all to do with changes in the memory map. I do find all these vintage computer idiosyncrasies interesting!

You should check out the plethora of threads regarding a S-Video mod on the VIC-20 here in Denial.
I will do that, maybe a future mini project for me. The picture quality is acceptable but there's room for improvement.

Re: Vic 20 Noob: trying to load Bewitched

I've got Bewitched to work! One important thing I didn't mention was I had a Simplex Data 16k memory pack plugged in, it hadn't occurred to me it could affect a cassette drive motor control! Removing the memory expansion allowed the game to load fully. I've now read that having too much ram can stop...

Re: Vic 20 Noob: trying to load Bewitched

Thanks both. I'll try re-cleaning the cassette drive heads this evening, move the cassette deck away from other electronics and check/clean the connectors in back of the Vic 20. Y and N keys are working okay. @beamrider thanks for correcting me on the RGB cable.. yes it's a DIN to RCA yellow/red/whi...

Vic 20 Noob: trying to load Bewitched

Hi I picked up my first ever Vic 20 last week and having some fun learning how it works. Fortunately it all worked apart from a broken RF cable which I replaced with a brand new RGB cable. I have picked up a couple of little games for it on cassette - Arcadia and Bewitched - both early releases by I...
