I can't speak for everyone, but I'll agree that 32k is probably fairly common. I did it to mine years ago.
Re: Morse
Excellent, I'll definitely check this out!!
Re: Morse
Very cool. Last year I attempted to learn Morse, but I wasn't able to dedicate the time to it. I'll give this a shot.

Re: VIC - why 22 Columns?
From Michael S. Tomczyk interesting book The Home Computer Wars http://www.stonan.com/dok/The.Home.Computer.Wars.pdf : Two VIC chip configurations were planned--22 columns and 40 columns, although the 40-column version was not designed yet. The 22-column version had larger letters but displayed only...

Welcome to VIC-20 ownership! Since you have the SDIEC already, you should head over here to grab some disk/cart images for unexpanded VICs:

Re: Vic-20 ethernet?
Alright, I know. This thread is ancient. But I recently picked up one of these for about $10 off eBay, played around with it enough to make it work from the VIC-20, and wrote it up a bit with some information on usage. Not sure if anyone is playing with these, but maybe it'll help others who go goog...

Excellent! FYI, I was able to load these using an XE1541 cable and VC-1541 (1541 emulator) by taking the D64 files into D64 Editor (http://www.d64editor.com) and exporting them out as PRGs.
